Fort Wayne Canterbury Repeats as Class A Champions after Penalty Kick Shootout
Junior Joel Groninger nailed the game winner to deliver a repeat state championship to Fort Wayne Canterbury in the Class A title match at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis.
Played under a continuous steady rain, Canterbury and Covenant Christian of Indianapolis battled through 94 minutes of scoreless play in a rematch of last year's championship also won by the Cavaliers. The two teams then connected on each of their first five penalty kicks of the first round. In the next session of kicks - sudden victory - the Covenant player's first attempt sailed over the top of net setting up Groninger's victorious goal on the next attempt and the 6-5 winning margin.
It was a record-extending seventh state crown for Canterbury (12-7-4) and 33rd year head coach Greg Mauch, the most for any coach in state history. The Cavaliers were making a state record 12th appearance in the boys finals and are now 7-2 in state championship matches.
It was the third state runner-up finish for Covenant Christian (13-9) since 2012. The Warriors were coached by second year leader David Pfeifer.
Noah Martin of Covenant Christian earns C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award
Noah Martin of Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis was named the winner of the 2018 C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award, sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, for Class A Boys Soccer by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.
The Warriors’ team captain has helped lead his team to nine (9) total shutouts this season as well as leading his team to two (2) consecutive State Finals. Martin is one of the top defensive players for Covenant Christian with 34 total steals. Noah also plays for the Zionsville Youth Soccer Association. He is a proud member of both the National Honor Society and DECA. He volunteers for his church sound booth on Sundays and has gone on a mission trip to Reynosa, Mexico twice, where he helped build homes for families.
The son of Jon and Marci, Noah is undecided about his college selection but is interested in pursuing a Business degree.
The IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, will award a scholarship for $1,000 to Covenant Christian High School in the name of Noah Martin. Since 1989, nearly $900,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school students in Indiana.
