Fort Wayne Canterbury captured its second straight state title in record fashion with a 5-0 win over Covenant Christian (Indianapolis) at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis.

The win gave Canterbury its fifth soccer state title, tying them with North Central (Indianapolis) for most in state history.

Sophomore Jacob Fritz opened the scoring for the Cavaliers in the eighth minute of play after an assist from junior Britt Watts. It was Fritz’s 12th goal of the season and Watts’ 21st assist. Canterbury never looked back, using a total team effort to add three more goals in the first half and another early in the second half on the way to a dominating 5-0 victory.

The Cavaliers utilized five different goal scorers in the game on four assists.  Two of those assists came from Watts, a new 1A state finals record. Canterbury finishes its season with a 16-6-1 record under head coach Greg Mauch, who has led the Cavaliers to four other state championship seasons in his career (1997, 1998, 2001, 2011). He is now tied with North Central coach Jerry Little for most state titles by a coach.

Covenant Christian, led by Michael Johnson, was making its first state finals appearance in any sport. The Warriors finished their season with a 10-13-2 record.

Chase Moyle of Fort Wayne Canterbury Wins Mental Attitude Award
Chase Moyle of Fort Wayne Canterbury High School was named winner of the 2012 C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award for Class A Boys Soccer by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Moyle, ranked third in his class, is president of the Key Club, member of the Student Government, and sports editor of the school newspaper. He has helped build houses for the homeless in Mexico and playgrounds for inner city children in New Orleans.

The senior defender led the Cavaliers to their second consecutive state finals appearance.  This year, he was named to the Academic All-State team.  Moyle is also a four-year letterman for the Cavaliers’ basketball team.

Chase is the son of Shep and Wendy Moyle of Roanoke.  He plans to attend Duke University next fall.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to Fort Wayne Canterbury High School in the name of Chase Moyle.
