Fort Wayne Canterbury Claims Back-to-Back Championships

Posted: October 31, 2015

An exciting overtime finish lead to Fort Wayne Canterbury claiming a back-to-back state championship with a 3-2 victory over Evansville Mater Dei.

The game, which was a rematch of last year’s state finals match, was a back and forth affair. Mater Dei’s Abby Schoenstein kicked off the day’s scoring with a goal in the opening minutes of the game, but Canterbury late in the half with a score by Sydney Colby to draw the score even. The start of the second half saw a role reversal for the two teams as the Cavaliers’ Abby Bergeron netted a goal in the first 41 seconds of the half. The Wildcats’ defense held Canterbury scoreless the remainder of the half, and they managed to force overtime with a goal from sophomore Lily Hoffman in the 56th minute of the game.

Abby Bergeron, however, wasn’t finished with her offensive production for the day. Just three minutes into the first overtime period, the Canterbury senior found the back of the net for the go ahead goal, and senior goal keeper Alexa Habig kept the Cavalier lead safe to ensure the school’s second consecutive state championship victory.

Canterbury, coached by Jennie Crandal, ended their state finals run with a record of 17-4-1. The Wildcats, under Coach Allison Garrard, wrapped up their season with a final record of 18-4-2.
