Central Catholic Girls Go to PKs for first State Title
Lafayette Central Catholic turned the tables on Park Tudor in the Class A girls championship contest, which featured the only rematch from the 2019 girls and boys seasons.
Central Catholic’s Madisyn Schultz beat PT goalkeeper Lucy Ferqueron to the left side in the 10th round of penalty kicks to give the Knights a 1-0 (9-8) victory in the contest at the Grand Park Sports Event Center in Westfield.
Last season, Park Tudor and coach John Simmonds won its first-ever state title with a 2-1 victory over LCC.
The contest, which goes down as the first-ever indoor state title game, featured two halves of a scoreless deadlock, followed by two overtime periods without a score.
In the first round of penalty kicks, both teams converted four times to force a second round, which came down to the final kicks. Central Catholic keeper Kate Hutzel made a diving save on the final Panther shot before Schultz stepped up with the game-winner.
Park Tudor (21-3) outshot the Knights, 17-14. Hutzel recorded nine saves in net for LCC, which finishes 16-3.
The state title is the first in program history for the Knights, coached by Bill Kerr.
