Bloomington South's Azcui, Carmel's Love, Padgett Earn Tennis State Titles
In hot and humid conditions with temperatures that climbed near 90 degrees and even hotter on the courts, Bloomington South's Denise Azcui and Carmel's Emma Love and Lauryn Padgett were honored as IHSAA girls tennis state champions in their respective state tournaments.
Azcui completed a second consecutive unbeaten season (29-0) with a hard-fought, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Carmel freshman Kiersten Carlson (24-3) for the singles crown. She became the first to win two consecutive championships since Anderson Highland's Ashlee Davis in 2003. Azcui finished 22-0 a year ago.
Love and Padgett, both juniors, completed their own unbeaten campaign at 20-0 with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Floyd Central's Alexis Applegate and Erin Patterson (20-5) for the doubles title. It was the second individual crown for Love who was one-half of last year’s doubles state championship pair when she teamed with Molly Fletchall.
