Daylen Taylor ran for three touchdowns in the first half to lead Chatard to a 34-3 win over Heritage Hills in the Class 3A championship game, giving the Trojans their state-best 14th title.

Taylor scored on runs of 2, 5 and 55 yards en route to a 22-carry, 172-yard performance.

Coach Rob Doyle’s squad completes a 14-1 season, winning their final 11 games. Chatard is now 14-1 in 15 championship game appearances – losing only in the 3A contest in 2005.

The Trojans took control from the start, taking the opening kickoff and driving 45 yards in eight plays, finishing it with Taylor’s 2-yard score.

After Heritage Hills scored what proved to be its only points on a 26-yard field goal, Taylor scored twice in the second quarter.

The Chatard defense got into the act in the fourth quarter as Patrick Mastrian returned an interception 47 yards with 11:50 left in the game.

A Kyle Cheek touchdown pass of 8 yards to Thomas Coleman closed the scoring.

The Patriots of coach Todd Wilkerson, who were seeking the school’s second state title (2000), finished 14-1.

Heritage Hills’ Cole Sigler named Ress Mental Attitude Award recipient
At the conclusion of the state championship game, the IHSAA Executive Committee named Cole Sigler of Heritage Hills High School as the winner of the Blake Ress Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A football.

Cole is a four-year letter-winner and was named this year’s All Conference MVP. In 2018-19 he received special recognition as All Conference Quarterback, Conference MVP, All Southwest Indiana Defensive Back, and All State Defensive Back. Aside from football, Sigler also is a two-year letter winner in basketball and baseball.

Sigler has also taken care of business in the classroom as he has been the top 10% of his class academically for four years. He has also volunteered his time with Feed My Starving Children, Relay for Life, and Santa Claus UM Youth Group Service Hours. Cole is involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Publications, 4-H Spencer County for nine years, and is part of the Santa Claus United Methodist Church Youth Group as well.

Cole is the son of Chris and Cathy Sigler of Santa Claus, Indiana.  He is undecided on his college choice but plans to study accounting.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by his principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability. The award is named in honor of the IHSAA’s seventh commissioner from 2000-11.

The Indianapolis Colts presented a $1,000 scholarship to Heritage Hills High School in the name of Cole Sigler. The Colts have been the presenting sponsor of the entire football state tournament since 2009 and are sponsoring the Blake Ress Mental Attitude Award.
