BREBEUF CAPTURES FIRST BOYS BASKETBALL STATE TITLE

Displaying dominating defense, Brebeuf led all the way to defeat Class 3A top-ranked Andrean 72-56 and win its first IHSAA boys basketball state title March 25, 2000 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Senior center Michael Bennett led Brebeuf (24-2) with 26 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Jon Owens added 16 points and four boards as the Braves won their 14th consecutive game and ended Andrean's 21-game winning streak.

Senior forward Shane Power led Andrean (24-3) with 27 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. The 27-point performance improved his career total to 2,110, and moved him into the No. 19 spot on Indiana's all-time scoring list. Power passed Daryl Warren (2,083) of Linden and Dan Palombizio (2,092) of Michigan City Rogers.

After a slow start by both teams, Brebeuf (24-2) jumped to a 15-4 lead capped by a three-point basket by Owens. The Braves led 15-9 after one quarter, 33-20 at halftime and 54-32 at the end of three quarters.

Andrean trimmed the Brebeuf lead to 11 points with a three-point field goal by Power with 3:52 remaining, but Brebeuf took control from there.

It was the second state championship for second-year Brebeuf coach Leo Klemm. He guided Santa Monica Catholic to the 1991 Class 4A South state championship in California.

POWER NAMED TRESTER AWARD RECIPIENT

Shane Power of Andrean High School was selected as the recipient of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Power, the No. 19 all-time leading scorer in Indiana history with 2,110 points, passed Daryl Warren (2,083) of Linden and Dan Palombizio (2,092) of Michigan City Rogers in the Class 3A state championship contest. Power has been awarded nine different Player of the Year awards and was the first player since Damon Bailey in 1989 to be a three-time Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Underclass All-State team member. Lake County's all-time leading scorer, Power was a four-year starter. The 59ers were 81-20 during those seasons.

Power, who has accepted a full scholarship to play basketball at Iowa State, plans to pursue a career in business.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Andrean High School in the name of Power.

CLASS 3A POST-GAME QUOTES

Brebeuf Coach Leo Klemm

"Our team attitude was the difference. We worked hard in every possession. We applied pressure on every possession, not only on defense, but also on offense."

"Shane Power is a great player, but we didn't do anything special on defense. We just tried to play five-on-five."

"Michael Bennett played great. He's a warrior and took it up strong, but all of our players played great."

"Andrean is a good team and at times, they gave us problems. But, we're very resilient. We make a mistake and we just come back and recover."

"It was a state championship victory, but to win it, we had to stay within the context of a basketball game. We did what we had to do. We played sound and fundamentally. That sounds simple, but that's the way we play on it."

BREBEUF PLAYER MICHAEL BENNETT

"Our defense pushed them out of what they wanted to do. We pressured them and they committed turnovers. On offense, I was fortunate to score, but I shot a lot of layups."

BREBEUF PLAYER JON OWENS

"On offense, we were patient and we didn't force it. We were able to work the ball inside against them."

ANDREAN COACH CLINT SWAN

"It's really the first time all season we have faced a basketball team physically stronger than we wer at every position."

ON GUARDING MICHAEL BENNETT: "We put a couple of guys on him and tried to get him in foul trouble, but by the time we got him in foul trouble, it was too late. Once he got the ball down there, he sees the double-team pretty quickly."

ON STOPPING BREBEUF'S TRANSITION GAME: "If you're turning the basketball over, it's hard to stop their transition game, and we knew that coming in."

ANDREAN PLAYER AND TRESTER AWARD RECIPIENT SHANE POWER

"It is very, very special. Only one guy in the state represents Class 3A and I am very happy to represent Class 3A."

ON FACING MICHAEL BENNETT: "I thought he was that strong coming into the game. I like his game a lot."
